Leah Jackson, LMHC, LPCMH, LIMHP, LMT

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and the founder of Body Wise, where I provide nervous system–centered, trauma- and disability-informed psychotherapy and professional education.

I am licensed to practice psychotherapy in New York, Delaware, and Nebraska, and offer therapy services via secure telehealth to adults located in those states.

I earned my Master of Science in 2016 from Long Island University. Prior to becoming a mental health counselor, I trained and practiced as a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) in New York, which continues to inform my embodied, nervous system–centered approach to care.

My combined background in mental health counseling and hands-on body-based work shapes how I understand trauma, regulation, and healing as experiences that live within both the mind and the body.

I approach both therapy and education with an emphasis on pacing, consent, relational safety, and ethical clarity. I believe that meaningful healing and learning happen when people feel oriented, respected, and supported within their nervous system capacity.

Professional Training and Experience

I hold licensure as a mental health counselor and have specialized training in trauma-informed and nervous system–centered approaches to care.

Over the course of a twenty-year career within a disability services agency in New York State, I worked across a wide range of roles supporting individuals with disabilities in community-based and residential settings. My experience includes:

  • Direct Support Professional (DSP)

  • Community Habilitation provider

  • Medicaid Service Coordinator (now referred to as Care Manager)

  • Assistant Residence Manager

  • Behavior Specialist

  • Assistant Director

Throughout this time, I also lived within community residence settings, offering lived-in support and care.

This progression provided comprehensive, real-world experience across direct care, clinical support, systems coordination, leadership, and organizational operations — perspectives that continue to inform my trauma- and disability-informed, nervous system–centered approach.

My earlier work as a Licensed Massage Therapist in New York provided a strong foundation in somatic awareness, nervous system regulation, and the body’s role in stress and recovery, which continues to shape both my clinical and educational work.

In addition to psychotherapy, I provide education and training for clinicians, caregivers, and organizations seeking to integrate nervous system awareness and trauma- and disability-informed frameworks into their work.

Educational offerings are distinct from therapy and are learning-based rather than clinical in nature.

How I Show Up in the Work

My presence as a therapist and educator is grounded, collaborative, and responsive.

I prioritize:

  • Creating spaces that feel safe, steady, and respectful

  • Honoring individual pace, capacity, and readiness

  • Maintaining clear boundaries and ethical scope

  • Supporting integration rather than urgency or overwhelm

I am committed to ongoing consultation, reflection, and continued professional development to ensure that my work remains ethical, responsive, and aligned with best practices.

Why I Created Body Wise

Body Wise was created to offer care and education that center the nervous system while remaining trauma- and disability-informed and ethically well-contained.

It is a space designed for:

  • Thoughtful, paced psychotherapy

  • Professionally grounded education and training

  • Clear distinctions between therapy and learning

  • Sustainable, long-term engagement

The intention is to support work that is steady, respectful, and deeply attuned to the realities of nervous system vulnerability.

I approach this work with humility, care, and respect for each person’s lived experience, capacities, and limits.
